Source-derived summary

Šatov (German: Schattau) is a market town in Znojmo District in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 1,100 inhabitants.

Etymology

The name was probably derived from the personal name Šat. According to local legend, the village was named in honour of Queen Svatava (also called Šatava).

Geography

Šatov is located about 7 kilometres (4 mi) south of Znojmo and 60 km (37 mi) southwest of Brno, on the border with Austria. It lies in the Dyje–Svratka Valley. The highest point is at 291 m (955 ft) above sea level. The Daníž Stream flows through the market town.

History

The first written mention of Šatov is from 1201. In 1338, the village became property of the town of Znojmo.

Editorial summary

Begin with the source’s own compact description: “Šatov” is městys in South Moravian, Czech Republic. The dossier treats that line as a proposition to test through Šatov, městys and South, not as a finished interpretation.

Editorial reviewA dependable orientation record for establishing vocabulary, names and a first evidence trail. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1201, 1338—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. For this dossier, Šatov, městys and South is the immediate research focus.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The phrase “městys in South Moravian, Czech Republic” supplies a clear boundary for inquiry. It also exposes the unanswered questions: who defined that boundary, when it became stable and which sources sit outside it.

Evidence profile

Vocabulary and entity names are the principal evidence signals here, because they determine the precision of every later search. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 27, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q391317. VIAF identifies the subject as 309582627. Authority coordinates are 48.793, 16.010. 3 of 3 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1201 and 1338.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
