Source-derived summary

The Índio Gigante is a Brazilian breed of domestic chicken. It is one of the largest chicken breeds in the world, particularly in terms of height.

History

The Índio Gigante originated in Brazil around the late 1980s or early 1990s in the states of Minas Gerais and Goiás.

It was created by crossbreeding large gamecocks — such as the Indian Game, the Shamo and the Malay — with caipira chickens (rustic mixed breeds).

The breed association – the Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Índio Gigante — publishes a breed standard and hopes that the breed will receive official recognition; it would be the first pure breed of chicken to originate from Brazil.

"Índio Gigante" is Portuguese for "Giant Indian"; "Índio" in Brazil refers to indigenous Brazilians and their culture (see also Native American name controversy).

Editorial summary

“Índio Gigante” enters the record as breed of chicken. Crown Archives preserves that source wording while asking what Índio, Gigante and breed can confirm, complicate or overturn.

Editorial reviewA practical starting point whose main value is the path it opens into stronger specialist and primary sources. The current 135-word lead offers orientation but no explicit four-digit date, so chronology should not be assumed. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. Its strongest next move is a source search built around Índio, Gigante and breed.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

“Índio Gigante” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Índio, Gigante and breed provides the most credible route into that argument.

Evidence profile

Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 27, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q30931945. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
