Hong Kong 97
1995 video game

Hong Kong 97 (also referred to as Hong Kong 1997 on the floppy disk cover) is an unlicensed shoot 'em up video game developed and published by HappySoft, a doujin game developer, for the Super Famicom. It was released in Japan in 1995, being sold as floppy disks. Designed by the Japanese game journalist Kowloon Kurosawa, who stated the game was a satire of the video game industry, Hong Kong 97 was made in seven days with the help of his friend.
The game takes place in China in 1997, during the handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom. Facing an increased crime rate due to immigration from Mainland China, the Hong Kong government hires Chin, a relative of Bruce Lee, to massacre the population of China. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has been conducting a secret project in which the deceased Tong Shau Ping [sic] will be resurrected and transformed into an "ultimate weapon" to battle Chin. After defeating Tong Shau Ping, the game is repeated indefinitely until Chin dies. Hong Kong 97 sold around 30 copies due to its underground bootleg release. It has since gained a cult following for its notoriously poor quality, offensive content and absurd gameplay. In retrospect, it is considered by critics and journalists to be among the worst games ever made.

Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 16, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q865277. 1 of 1 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1997 and 1995.
Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
