Source-derived summary

Samuel George Ehlinger ( EL-in-gər; born September 30, 1998) is an American professional football quarterback for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He previously played for the Indianapolis Colts. He played college football for the Texas Longhorns, where he led the team to the 2018 Big 12 Championship Game and two bowl games. The Indianapolis Colts selected him in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Early life

Ehlinger attended and played quarterback for Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, where he was coached by Todd Dodge. Ehlinger graduated as the school's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, surpassing Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Drew Brees and Nick Foles. He was named the MaxPreps National Junior of the Year after his junior season, and was rated by Rivals.com as a four-star recruit, and received offers from Florida State, Houston, McNeese State, Oklahoma State, SMU, Texas Tech, and Wyoming, as well as his hometown team of Texas. He committed to play football at the University of Texas at Austin on July 28, 2015.

College career

2017 season

Ehlinger joined the Texas Longhorns under new head coach Tom Herman, who inherited an offense led by sophomore starting quarterback Shane Buechele. Addressing competition between Ehlinger and Buechele for the starting quarterback position for the 2017 season during spring practice, offensive coordinator Tim Beck described Buechele as having quicker adaptability than Ehlinger.

Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The phrase “american football player” supplies a clear boundary for inquiry. It also exposes the unanswered questions: who defined that boundary, when it became stable and which sources sit outside it.

Evidence profile

The entry’s evidential value lies in the named roles, institutions and publications that can be tested against primary documentation. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 29, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q42301562. 1 of 1 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1998, 2018, 2021 and 2015.

Critical limits

A concise life account rarely captures disputed attribution, private networks or the changing language used to describe a career. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it
