Source-derived summary

Star Trek is an American science fiction media franchise that started with a television series (simply called Star Trek but now referred to as Star Trek: The Original Series) created by Gene Roddenberry. The series was first broadcast from 1966 to 1969. Since then, the Star Trek canon has expanded to include many other series, a film franchise, and other media.

The film franchise is produced by Paramount Pictures and began with Star Trek: The Motion

After a break of several years, a new film simply titled Star Trek was released in 2009. It serves as a reboot of the franchise, with new actors portraying younger versions of the Original Series characters, but it is technically a narrative continuation set in an alternate timeline called the "Kelvin Timeline". Two sequels were produced. From 2015 to 2025, several attempts at a fourth reboot film or other continuation were attempted. During that time, the franchise's first television film, Star Trek: Section 31 (2025), was released on the streaming service Paramount+; it is set in the original timeline.

Following the merger of Skydance Media and Paramount Global, the new Paramount Skydance chose not to continue the reboot films. A new feature film is in development as a fresh start for the franchise.

Editorial summary

This brief starts where responsible research should: with the source description of “List of Star Trek films” as film series. Everything that follows is an evidence route, not borrowed authority.

Editorial reviewBest approached as a cultural-object dossier: authorship and date matter, but circulation and reception often explain the wider significance. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1966, 1969, 2009, 2015—that can be checked directly. The linked authority record independently contributes the date 1979-12-07. The account is most persuasive where List, Star and Trek can be independently traced.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The subject matters to the arts & letters register because the source frames it as film series. Its deeper value depends on whether names, dates, institutions and citations support that framing.

Evidence profile

Attribution, date and provenance are strongest when supported by the original work, a catalogue record and documented transmission. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 21, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q1102217. The Library of Congress control number is sh85127380. 1 of 2 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1966, 1969, 2009 and 2015.

Critical limits

Titles can refer to several editions, objects or performances, making precise identification essential before interpretation. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Separate the work, its editions or performances, and its later reception. Catalogue records, publication histories and object files often preserve different parts of that story.
