Source-derived summary

Samarendra Nath Ghoshal (1923 – 2007) was an Indian nuclear physicist and educator. He did some research in this area, particularly early in his career, but spent most of his life in various educational roles in Kolkata and Lucknow, India.

Personal life and education

Ghoshal was born in Kolkata in 1923.

Ghoshal completed his Master of Science degree at the University of Calcutta. He earned his doctoral degree at the University of California, Berkeley under the supervision of Emilio Segrè, where he focused on the young field of experimental nuclear physics. In a 1950 paper published in Physical Review, Ghoshal provided experimental support for Niels Bohr's theoretical model of the formation of compound nuclei. Though this was during the time of his doctoral studies, he planned and completed this experiment and paper while Segrè was away.

Ghoshal became bedridden due to a stroke and died in 2007.

Career

During his career, Ghoshal taught at Lucknow University, the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Presidency College, Calcutta, and the University of Calcutta (where he served as Khaira Professor of Physics). Roles in administration included being principal at Presidency College, Calcutta and Director of Public Instruction.

Editorial summary

The public source identifies “S. N. Ghoshal” as indian nuclear physicist. This brief keeps that definition visible, then builds a research path around Ghoshal, Indian and nuclear.

Editorial reviewA dependable orientation record for establishing vocabulary, names and a first evidence trail. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1923, 2007, 1950—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. Its value is orientation rather than verdict, with Ghoshal, Indian and nuclear providing the first useful test.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “S. N. Ghoshal”, the useful work is to connect “indian nuclear physicist” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 29, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q140707422. VIAF identifies the subject as 3422157342842110100003. None of the 1 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 1923, 2007 and 1950.

Critical limits

A concise general-reference account can conceal disagreements about scope, terminology or the weight assigned to individual sources. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
