Rafflesia schadenbergiana
species of plant

Rafflesia schadenbergiana is a parasitic plant species in the family Rafflesiaceae, endemic to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. It has the largest flower among the Rafflesia species found in the Philippines, with a diameter of 52–80 cm (20–30 in). It has also the second largest flower in the genus after R. arnoldii.
This species was first collected in the vicinity of Mount Apo on Mindanao, during an expedition led by Alexander Schadenberg and Otto Koch in 1882. It was not seen for more than a century and was assumed to be extinct until Pascal Lays found a specimen of this species in South Cotabato in 1994 while studying the Tasaday people. A population of this rare Rafflesia species was recently discovered in Baungon in Bukidnon province, just outside the buffer zone of the Mount Kitanglad Natural Park in 2007.
The public source identifies “Rafflesia schadenbergiana” as species of plant. This brief keeps that definition visible, then builds a research path around Rafflesia, schadenbergiana and species.
Why this record matters
A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Rafflesia schadenbergiana”, the useful work is to connect “species of plant” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.
The date and method of observation matter as much as the stated conclusion, especially where classification or consensus has changed. The source revision retrieved here is dated Jul 16, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q2439373. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 1882, 1994 and 2007.
A general summary may omit uncertainty, sample limits or methodological disagreement that is explicit in the technical record. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
