Source-derived summary

Marie Joseph Pierre François Kœnig (also Pierre Kœnig or Koenig; 10 October 1898 – 2 September 1970) was a French general who most notably commanded a Free French brigade at the Battle of Bir Hakeim in North Africa in 1942. The battle was a heroic show of strength, as the Free French held their position for 2 weeks and 2 days despite being outnumbered ten to one.

After the war he was made military governor of the French occupation zone in Germany (1945–1949) before starting a political career. He served twice as Minister of National Defence and the Armed Forces in the 1950s. He was posthumously elevated to the position of Marshal of France in 1984, being the last titleholder to date.

Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

“Marie-Pierre Kœnig” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Marie-Pierre, Kœnig and French provides the most credible route into that argument.

Evidence profile

Biographical claims are most persuasive when dates, appointments and relationships can be traced to records created close to the events described. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 5, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q433116. VIAF identifies the subject as 71433975. The Library of Congress control number is n87147672. 3 of 4 selected statements include explicit references; 3 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1898, 1970, 1942 and 1945.

Critical limits

Public reputation and documentary evidence do not always develop together; absence from a summary is not evidence of historical absence. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it
