Phool Aur Kaante
1991 Hindi film directed by Kuku Kohli

Phool Aur Kaante (transl. Flowers and Thorns) is a 1991 Indian Hindi-language action-romance film directed by Kuku Kohli. It stars Ajay Devgan, Madhoo, Aruna Irani, Jagdeep and Amrish Puri among others. The film marked the debut of Devgan, son of stunt and action choreographer Veeru Devgan, and Madhoo, niece of actress Hema Malini. The film was a blockbuster and won Devgan the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for 1991. This film was remade in Telugu as Varasudu and in Odia as Dhire Dhire Prema Hela.
Phool Aur Kaante was noted for its soundtrack and action sequences. Devgan's entry in the film became very popular where he appeared standing, balancing on two moving motorcycles. Similar stunts have been repeated in a number of films since, sometimes by Devgan himself.
Some scenes of the film were shot at Vanganga Lake near Silvassa (capital of the then union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli).
Upon release, the film received positive response both from critics and audience.

Why this record matters
A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Phool Aur Kaante”, the useful work is to connect “1991 Hindi film directed by Kuku Kohli” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.
Reception evidence should be dated and situated: later canonical status may differ sharply from the work’s initial circulation. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 13, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q7187334. 1 of 1 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1991.
Later fame can flatten the distinction between original context, subsequent adaptation and institutional collecting history. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
