Source-derived summary

Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha (c. 1495, Parga – 15 March 1536, Constantinople) was an Ottoman statesman who served as Grand Vizier from 1523 to 1536 during the reign of Suleiman I, and played a role in important political and military events. Because of the authority he wielded, he is regarded as the brains behind the Ottoman Empire's foreign policy.

Although his ethnic origin is not known with certainty, various sources have described him as being of Greek, Italian, Albanian, or Croatian origin. His father is believed to have been a sailor or fisherman living in Parga. Brought to Manisa at a young age through the devşirme system, Ibrahim was taken into the service of Prince Suleiman there and remained at his side until his death. He participated in the Belgrade campaign in 1521 and the Rhodes campaign in 1522. Rising rapidly during the early years of Suleiman's reign, he first became chief of the imperial chamber, and was later unexpectedly appointed Grand Vizier. In addition, he held the offices of beylerbey of Rumelia and Anatolia, as well as that of serasker.

Shortly after marrying in a lavish wedding in 1524, he was sent to Egypt, where he was tasked with restoring order following the rebellion of Hain Ahmed Pasha.

Editorial summary

Begin with the source’s own compact description: “Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha” is 29º Ottoman Grand Vizier (1493-1536). The dossier treats that line as a proposition to test through Pargalı, Ibrahim and Pasha, not as a finished interpretation.

Editorial reviewA dependable orientation record for establishing vocabulary, names and a first evidence trail. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1495, 1536, 1523, 1521—that can be checked directly. The authority record carries competing date values—1493, 1495—which should remain separate until their references and qualifiers are resolved. For this dossier, Pargalı, Ibrahim and Pasha is the immediate research focus.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The phrase “29º Ottoman Grand Vizier (1493-1536)” supplies a clear boundary for inquiry. It also exposes the unanswered questions: who defined that boundary, when it became stable and which sources sit outside it.

Evidence profile

Vocabulary and entity names are the principal evidence signals here, because they determine the precision of every later search. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 25, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q511943. VIAF identifies the subject as 1576564. The Library of Congress control number is n88254189. 4 of 4 selected statements include explicit references; 2 carry qualifiers and 1 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1495, 1536, 1523 and 1521.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
