Chakrabarty was born in Kolkata, West Bengal on 25 December 1952 to Ajit Kumar Chakraborty and Mahamaya Devi.

He graduated his class in music, both in B.A and M.A. from the Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata and then ITC Sangeet Research Academy in 1977 as its first scholar.

His father, Ajit Chakrabarty, was his first music teacher. He then studied with Pannalal Samanta, Kanaidas Bairagi, Munawar Ali Khan and Jnan Prakash Ghosh.

Besides that, he had learnt from Latafat Hussain Khan, Nibruttibua Sarnaik, Hirabai Barodekar and in Carnatic styles from M. Balamuralikrishna. Apart from khyal, he also renders lighter forms such as Thumri, Tappa, Bhajan, Kirtan, Folk, Film/Non-Film and modern songs, in several different languages.

He has received several prestigious awards including the Padma Shri (2011), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (Delhi, 1999–2000), Kumar Gandharva National Award (1993) and the Best Male Playback Singer Award (Bengali Film "Chhandaneer" 1990) ("For bringing the rare depth of emotion, adorned by his command on the classical idiom") and National Tansen Samman 2015 - by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. He has also received felicitations from both the former and present Chief Ministers of his own State, West Bengal.

Editorial summary

“Ajoy Chakrabarty” enters the record as indian singer. Crown Archives preserves that source wording while asking what Ajoy, Chakrabarty and Indian can confirm, complicate or overturn.

Editorial reviewA productive starting point for separating a subject’s documented career from later reputation and commemoration. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1952, 2020, 2011, 1977—that can be checked directly. The authority record carries competing date values—1952-12-25, 1953-01-01—which should remain separate until their references and qualifiers are resolved. Its strongest next move is a source search built around Ajoy, Chakrabarty and Indian.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

“Ajoy Chakrabarty” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Ajoy, Chakrabarty and Indian provides the most credible route into that argument.

Evidence profile

Chronology provides the most reliable spine for this subject; interpretation should follow only after identities and dates are secure. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 19, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q3351775. VIAF identifies the subject as 59275808. The Library of Congress control number is n88667451. 3 of 5 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1952, 2020, 2011 and 1977.

Critical limits

Public reputation and documentary evidence do not always develop together; absence from a summary is not evidence of historical absence. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Read biographical claims against dates, named institutions and the cited references. Distinguish a subject’s later reputation from evidence produced during their lifetime.
