Norwegian Prosecuting Authority
body responsible for legal prosecutions in Norway

Norwegian Prosecuting Authority (Norwegian: Påtalemyndigheten) is a body subordinate to the Norwegian Council of State.
This body is responsible for legal prosecutions in Norway. It is divided into three levels. The third level of the Prosecuting Authority is the Police. The first two, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Public Prosecutors, are called "the Higher Prosecuting Authority" (Norwegian: Den høyere påtalemyndighet). Public Prosecutors work on a regional basis, whereas the Director of Public Prosecutions (Norwegian: Riksadvokat) has the coordinative leadership. When Tor-Aksel Busch resigned on 31 October 2019 he was the longest serving Riksadvokat in Norway's history.
This brief starts where responsible research should: with the source description of “Norwegian Prosecuting Authority” as body responsible for legal prosecutions in Norway. Everything that follows is an evidence route, not borrowed authority.
Why this record matters
The subject matters to the general reference register because the source frames it as body responsible for legal prosecutions in Norway. Its deeper value depends on whether names, dates, institutions and citations support that framing.
The citation trail is more important than the brevity of the summary: it shows where individual claims can be examined in context. The source revision retrieved here is dated Jul 13, 2025. The linked authority identifier is Q7061226. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 2019.
A concise general-reference account can conceal disagreements about scope, terminology or the weight assigned to individual sources. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
