Source-derived summary

As of January 6, 2025, 15 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay. This list of Guantánamo prisoners has the known identities of prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba, but is compiled from various sources and is incomplete. In official documents, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) continues to make intermittent efforts to redact prisoner's names.

The Washington Post maintains a list of the prisoners known or suspected to have been held in Guantánamo Bay.

On March 3, 2006, the DoD partially complied with a court order to release the names of the remaining Guantánamo detainees. The court order required the DoD to release the names of all the detainees. Initially, the DoD released only 317 names. Then, on April 19, 2006, the DoD released a list with 558 names in what appears to be a fax or other scanned image. The Associated Press published the list in more accessible text form. Pentagon spokesmen Bryan Whitman justified withholding the names out of a concern for the detainees' privacy, although Judge Jed Rakoff had already dismissed this argument.

Editorial summary

“List of Guantanamo Bay detainees” enters the record as wikimedia list article. Crown Archives preserves that source wording while asking what List, Guantanamo and detainees can confirm, complicate or overturn.

Editorial reviewA practical starting point whose main value is the path it opens into stronger specialist and primary sources. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—2025, 2006—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. Its strongest next move is a source search built around List, Guantanamo and detainees.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

“List of Guantanamo Bay detainees” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, List, Guantanamo and detainees provides the most credible route into that argument.

Evidence profile

Vocabulary and entity names are the principal evidence signals here, because they determine the precision of every later search. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 24, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q3243677. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 2025 and 2006.

Critical limits

The absence of detail may reflect summary conventions rather than a lack of surviving documentation. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
