Source-derived summary

Mustapha Ben Youcef El-Mesrati, also known as Bey Bouchelaghem, was the Bey of the Western Beylik from 1686 to 1734/37.

Origins and early life

Mustapha, born as Mustapha ben Youcef was the son of an Algerian Zenetian Berber man called Youcef el-Mesrati, a noble from the Kalaa of Beni Rached, and an Algerian woman. His father served as Khalifa (lieutenant-governor) to the Bey of Constantine. He moved back to Mostaganem where he had eight children, the first-born being Mustapha. Several of his siblings would also later become Beys of Oran.

His full name was Mustapha ben Youcef Ben Mohamed ben Ishaq el-Mesrati. The name Bouchelaghem, and its Spanish version "El Bigotillos," was an epithet referring to his Moustache.

Bey

He was elected as Bey in 1686, after the previous bey Chaban-ez-Zenagui was killed in front of Oran.

In 1701 he moved his capital to Mascara, and built a garrison there. The reason for this was its more central location.

Editorial summary

Begin with the source’s own compact description: “Mustapha Bouchelaghem” is bey of the Western Beylik. The dossier treats that line as a proposition to test through Mustapha, Bouchelaghem and Western, not as a finished interpretation.

Editorial reviewA dependable orientation record for establishing vocabulary, names and a first evidence trail. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1686, 1734, 1701—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. For this dossier, Mustapha, Bouchelaghem and Western is the immediate research focus.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The phrase “bey of the Western Beylik” supplies a clear boundary for inquiry. It also exposes the unanswered questions: who defined that boundary, when it became stable and which sources sit outside it.

Evidence profile

Vocabulary and entity names are the principal evidence signals here, because they determine the precision of every later search. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 21, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q105973707. VIAF identifies the subject as 9105156991001661180008. None of the 1 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 1686, 1734 and 1701.

Critical limits

The absence of detail may reflect summary conventions rather than a lack of surviving documentation. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
