Source-derived summary

Clubul Sportiv Mureșul Târgu Mureș, commonly known as Mureșul Târgu Mureș, was a Romanian football club based in Târgu Mureș, Mureș County. Founded in 1921 as SS Mureșul Târgu Mureș, the club became one of the city's leading teams during the interwar period and twice reached the semi-finals of the Romanian national championship, in 1923–24 and 1931–32.

The original Mureșul ceased activity in 1940, following the territorial changes caused by the Second Vienna Award. A separate club, CS Târgu Mureș, was founded in 1944 and became the city's principal post-war team. In 1960, after CS Târgu Mureș disappeared from the national leagues, its structure was combined with Voința Târgu Mureș in a new Mureșul project. In September 1964, Mureșul merged into ASA Târgu Mureș, a separate military club founded in 1962, bringing the Mureșul name to an end.

History

Foundation and early regional football (1921–1923)

Mureșul Târgu Mureș was founded in 1921 under the name SS Mureșul Târgu Mureș. The name referred to the Mureș River, which flows through the city.

In 1923, the club joined forces with the local railway workers' team CFR Târgu Mureș and adopted the name CFR Mureșul Târgu Mureș. The merger strengthened the squad and allowed Mureșul to become one of the leading teams in the Târgu Mureș regional championship.

Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Mureșul Târgu Mureș”, the useful work is to connect “football club” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 29, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q1024470. 1 of 1 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1921, 1923, 1931 and 1940.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it
