Montseny brook newt
species of amphibians

The Montseny brook newt (Catalan: tritó del Montseny; Calotriton arnoldi) is a species of salamander in the family Salamandridae. It is endemic to the Montseny Massif (Catalan Pre-Coastal Range) in northeast Spain. Before it was formally described in 2005, it was mixed with the larger and more widely distributed Pyrenean brook salamander (Calotriton asper, formerly Euproctus asper).
Description
Montseny brook newt males measure 56–59 mm (2.2–2.3 in) and females 57–59 mm (2.2–2.3 in) in snout–vent length. Tail is 34–44 mm (1.3–1.7 in) and the maximum body size is 103 mm (4.1 in). Dorsum is dark, chocolate-coloured. Head is strongly flattened. Body is oval in cross-section and with some dorsoventral compression.
When handled, Montseny brook newts release a whitish, noxious, sticky, and very odorous skin secretion. This is probably a defence mechanism against predators.
Begin with the source’s own compact description: “Montseny brook newt” is species of amphibians. The dossier treats that line as a proposition to test through Montseny, brook and newt, not as a finished interpretation.
Why this record matters
The phrase “species of amphibians” supplies a clear boundary for inquiry. It also exposes the unanswered questions: who defined that boundary, when it became stable and which sources sit outside it.
Datasets, specimens, observations and peer-reviewed methods provide the appropriate test for the technical claims summarized here. The source revision retrieved here is dated Apr 23, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q2670899. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 2005.
Current terminology should not be projected backward without checking the classification used when the underlying evidence was created. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
