Source-derived summary

The Mitsubishi 500 was the first passenger car produced after the Second World War by Shin Mitsubishi Heavy-Industries, Ltd, one of the companies which would become Mitsubishi Motors. It was built from 1960 until 1962 and formed the basis for Mitsubishi's next model, the Colt 600. It was exported in small numbers.

Correspondance from 1999 indicates just 8 surviving vehicles. In 2026 we suspect just 5

3 in Japanese automotive museums and one in the Peterson museum in Los Angeles .

We have verified data and invoices and correspondence to validate that the 5th surviving car is based in Great Britain and was purchased in 1999 for the sum of 2,400,000 Japanese Yen or £13,800 English pounds stirling . The car was described as extremely rare due to its totally unmolested original specification and roadworthy condition . That remains the case today in 2026. It's value today as a UNICORN historic vehicle is estimated to be between £40,000 and £80,000 and is considered a One of One car .

Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The subject matters to the general reference register because the source frames it as car model. Its deeper value depends on whether names, dates, institutions and citations support that framing.

Evidence profile

Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 24, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q1418208. 1 of 1 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1960, 1962, 1999 and 2026.

Critical limits

A concise general-reference account can conceal disagreements about scope, terminology or the weight assigned to individual sources. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
