Source-derived summary

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment is an executive-department of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, responsible for the ecological and environmental affairs. It is the 15th-ranked department in the State Council.

The Ministry is the nation's environmental protection department charged with the task of protecting China's air, water, and land from pollution and contamination. Directly under the State Council, it is empowered and required by law to implement environmental policies and enforce environmental laws and regulations. Complementing its regulatory role, it funds and organizes research and development.

History

In 1972, Chinese representatives attended the First United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Sweden. The next year, 1973, saw the establishment of the Environmental Protection Leadership Group.

In 1982, the Leadership Group merged with the National City Development Bureau, the National Architectural Engineering Bureau, and the National Cartography Bureau, in addition to part of the National Committee of Infrastructure, to form the Ministry of Urban and Rural Construction Environmental Protection. In 1984, the environmental protection bureau under the ministry was renamed into the State Environmental Protection Bureau before splitting into an independent bureau in 1988. In 1998, the Chinese government promoted the Bureau to a ministry-level agency, which then became the State Environmental Protection Administration.

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Ministry of Ecology and Environment”, the useful work is to connect “department of the State Council of China” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

Vocabulary and entity names are the principal evidence signals here, because they determine the precision of every later search. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 6, 2026. Critical limits

A concise general-reference account can conceal disagreements about scope, terminology or the weight assigned to individual sources. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
