Source-derived summary

Sir Lloyd George Geering (born 26 February 1918) is a New Zealand theologian who faced charges of heresy in 1967 for teaching that the Bible's record of Jesus' death and resurrection is not true. He considers Christian and Muslim fundamentalism to be "social evils". Geering is emeritus professor of religious studies at Victoria University of Wellington. In 2007, he was appointed a Member of the Order of New Zealand, New Zealand's highest civilian honour, limited to 20 living people. Geering turned 100 in February 2018. Since 17 September 2025, he has been New Zealand's oldest living man.

Early life and family

Geering was born in Rangiora on 26 February 1918, the son of Alice (née Johnston) and George Frederick Thomas Geering. He was brought up in Dunedin, before the family spent four years from 1927 to 1930 in Australia, where Geering was dux of Warrnambool Elementary School, then returning to Dunedin. He was educated at Otago Boys' High School from 1931 to 1935, where he was dux in his final year and vice-captain of the hockey 1st XI.

In 1936, Geering went on to study mathematics at the University of Otago. He "embraced" the Christian tradition in 1937, after a friend invited him to church and to the Student Christian Movement.

Its strongest next move is a source search built around Lloyd, Geering and Zealand.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

“Lloyd Geering” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Lloyd, Geering and Zealand provides the most credible route into that argument.

Evidence profile

Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 31, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q6662427. VIAF identifies the subject as 51906630. The Library of Congress control number is n50018251. 3 of 3 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1918, 1967, 2007 and 2018.

Critical limits

A concise general-reference account can conceal disagreements about scope, terminology or the weight assigned to individual sources. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it
