Source-derived summary

The total installed power generation capacity in India as of 31 July 2026 is around 552 GW, with sectors and types as shown below.

For the state wise installed power generation capacity, refer to States of India by installed power capacity.

Hydroelectric power plants with ≤ 25 MW generation capacity are included in the renewable category (classified as SHP - small hydro project).

The breakdown of renewable energy sources is:

Solar power - 164,594.75 MW (includes ground mounted solar, rooftop solar, hybrid solar, off-grid solar and PM KUSUM)

Wind power - 58,136.89 MW

Biomass / cogeneration - 10,869.17 MW

Small hydro - 5,181.76 MW

Waste-to-energy - 878.40 MW

The following lists name many of the utility power stations in India.

Conventional

Nuclear power

As of 30 April 2025, India has 25 operational nuclear reactors with a installed capacity of 8880 MW (1.9 % of total installed capacity) accounting for around 3% of electricity generation. Ten more reactors with total capacity of 8000 MW are under construction.

Thermal power

Thermal power is the largest source of power in India. There are different types of thermal power plants based on the fuel used to generate the steam, such as coal, gas, diesel, and natural gas. About 71% of the electricity consumed in India is generated by thermal power plants.

Coal

More than 62% of India's electricity demand is met through the country's vast coal reserves.

Editorial summary

Begin with the source’s own compact description: “List of power stations in India” is wikimedia list article. The dossier treats that line as a proposition to test through List, power and stations, not as a finished interpretation.

Editorial reviewA dependable orientation record for establishing vocabulary, names and a first evidence trail. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—2026, 2025—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. For this dossier, List, power and stations is the immediate research focus.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The phrase “wikimedia list article” supplies a clear boundary for inquiry. It also exposes the unanswered questions: who defined that boundary, when it became stable and which sources sit outside it.

Evidence profile

The citation trail is more important than the brevity of the summary: it shows where individual claims can be examined in context. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 24, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q14975424. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 2026 and 2025.

Critical limits

The absence of detail may reflect summary conventions rather than a lack of surviving documentation. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
