Source-derived summary

Kondraty Selivanov (Russian: Кондрáтий Селивáнов; 1730/40–1832) was a Russian religious leader who was one of the founders of the Skoptsy, a Spiritual Christian sect whose members practiced castration as a means of achieving salvation. He was worshipped by the members of the sect as a second Christ and redeemer and as Peter III, the Russian emperor who was overthrown and assassinated in 1762.

Origin and early activities

Contradictory reports exist about Selivanov's date of birth and his real name. According to Selivanov's own testimony, he was about five years old during the reign Peter I (r. 1682–1725) and castrated himself in the fourteenth year of his life, during the reign of Empress Anna (r. 1730–1740); but this is unlikely as it would mean that he died about 120 years after his birth. He was reportedly about 35 years old when he was arrested in 1775. The Orthodox Encyclopedia gives the date range of 1730–1740 for his birth. He may have used, at various times, the names Andreyan, Foma, Ivan, or Andrey.

The Skoptsy emerged as a breakaway movement within the Khlysts—a preceding Russian sect—at the end of the 1760s. Their earliest documented appearance is in an investigation conducted in the Orlovsky Uyezd (county) in 1772, which resulted in the arrest of 60 people, about half of whom had been castrated. The investigation identified three leaders of the movement: the escaped serfs Andrey Ivanov Blokhin and Kondraty Nikiforov (sometimes called Trifonov or Trofimov); and Mikhayla Nikulin, a Khlyst preacher.

Editorial summary

This brief starts where responsible research should: with the source description of “Kondraty Selivanov” as founder of the Skoptsy Christian denomination. Everything that follows is an evidence route, not borrowed authority.

Editorial reviewA dependable orientation record for establishing vocabulary, names and a first evidence trail. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1730, 1832, 1762, 1682—that can be checked directly. The authority record carries competing date values—1730, 1732, 1720, 1740—which should remain separate until their references and qualifiers are resolved. The account is most persuasive where Kondraty, Selivanov and founder can be independently traced.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The subject matters to the general reference register because the source frames it as founder of the Skoptsy Christian denomination. Its deeper value depends on whether names, dates, institutions and citations support that framing.

Evidence profile

Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 1, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q3816348. 1 of 4 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1730, 1832, 1762 and 1682.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
