Source-derived summary

Salantai () is a city in Lithuania. It is located in the Klaipėda County, Kretinga district.

Etymology

Salantai is named after the Salantas River, which runs through the city.

History

The Salantai region is known to have been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The first mention of a settlement was in 1556; the Skilandžiai manor and town are mentioned. By 1567, the settlement had a marketplace, 4 streets, and 27 houses. In 1630, the first church was constructed. Starting from 1638, Skilandžiai was called Salantai. In 1667, a parish school was founded. In 1668, Salantai was named a town in which 66 families lived at the time.

Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

“Salantai” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Salantai, city and Lithuania provides the most credible route into that argument.

Evidence profile

Place names and jurisdictional language are key evidence: both can reveal earlier catalogue descriptions and overlooked record series. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 12, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q157516. VIAF identifies the subject as 32159697646903311897. Authority coordinates are 56.058, 21.567. 1 of 2 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1556, 1567, 1630 and 1638.

Critical limits

A single description cannot reconcile every naming convention, rebuilding phase or administrative transfer associated with a place. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Treat names, boundaries and functions as historically changeable. Maps, plans, inventories and administrative records can clarify what the place meant at different dates.
