Source-derived summary

Argyrochosma lumholtzii is a rare fern in the family Pteridaceae known from Sonora, Mexico. It is quite similar to Jones' false cloak fern, but has black leaf axes and a less highly divided leaf. First described as a species in 1939, honoring the explorer Carl Sofus Lumholtz, it was transferred to the new genus Argyrochosma in 1987.

Description

Argyrochosma lumholtzii is a small fern. Its rhizome is compact and upright. It bears linear or linear-ligulate (straplike) scales 4 to 5 millimeters (0.2 to 0.2 in) long, long-acuminate at the tip, somewhat twisted, of a uniform orange-brown or reddish-brown color, with entire (toothless) margins.

The fronds arise in clumps from the rhizome. They are 7 to 15 centimeters (2.8 to 5.9 in) long from the base to the tip of the leaf. Of this length, about two-thirds is made up by the stipe (the stalk of the leaf, below the blade), which is shiny and round, hairless, and black in color.

The leaf blades are deltate-lanceolate to deltate-ovate.

Editorial summary

The public source identifies “Argyrochosma lumholtzii” as species of plant. This brief keeps that definition visible, then builds a research path around Argyrochosma, lumholtzii and species.

Editorial reviewA sound reference starting point where classification, measurement and the date of the underlying evidence remain visible. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1939, 1987—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. Its value is orientation rather than verdict, with Argyrochosma, lumholtzii and species providing the first useful test.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Argyrochosma lumholtzii”, the useful work is to connect “species of plant” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

Datasets, specimens, observations and peer-reviewed methods provide the appropriate test for the technical claims summarized here. The source revision retrieved here is dated Jul 4, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q15598363. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 1939 and 1987.

Critical limits

Scientific names, classifications and consensus can change while older terminology persists in catalogues and historical literature. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Check terminology, classification and the date of the cited evidence. Scientific names and technical consensus can change while older records retain historical value.

Three-step research path

  1. Establish the record: confirm the title “Argyrochosma lumholtzii”, its source revision and the description used here.
  2. Expand the search: follow Argyrochosma lumholtzii primary sources, Argyrochosma lumholtzii archive and Argyrochosma research across catalogues and specialist indexes.
  3. Test the account: compare the strongest cited source with the responsible institution’s current record and note any disagreement.

Questions for further research

  1. Which source most directly establishes the central claim about “Argyrochosma lumholtzii”?
  2. Which observation, specimen, dataset or publication supports the account?
  3. Has classification or technical consensus changed since the cited source?
