Source-derived summary

The Heinkel H.E.8 was a reconnaissance monoplane floatplane built in Germany in the late 1920s. It was developed at the request of the Royal Danish Navy, which required a similar aircraft to the H.E.5 being operated in Sweden.

Service History

In addition to purchasing seven German-built H.E.8a aircraft, which were described as mailplanes to avoid restrictions on military aircraft, 16 H.E.8bs were built under license in Denmark by the Orlogsværftet Naval shipyards, with a final batch not being delivered until 1938. Apart from its engine, the H.E.8 differed from previous members of the H.E.1 family in having a conventional empennage.

22 aircraft were operated by the Royal Danish Navy as the HM.II until the German invasion in 1940, after which one example may have been impressed into Luftwaffe service while the remainder were stored, until most were destroyed in 1943.

A single H.E.8 was built with a Packard 3A-2500 engine and designated H.E.31.

A single H.E.8d was built under licence in Yugoslavia by Zmaj Aircraft. It was initially used for testing by 2. Seaplane Kommando at Split, Yugoslavia, and was later used for target towing duties until fleeing to Greece following the fall of Yugoslavia in WW2.

Editorial reviewA dependable orientation record for establishing vocabulary, names and a first evidence trail. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1938, 1940, 1943—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. Its value is orientation rather than verdict, with Heinkel, type and aircraft providing the first useful test.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Heinkel HE 8”, the useful work is to connect “type of aircraft” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

Vocabulary and entity names are the principal evidence signals here, because they determine the precision of every later search. The source revision retrieved here is dated Jul 10, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q2638629. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 1938, 1940 and 1943.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
