Source-derived summary

Blaira ornata, known with common names ornate toad, Malabar torrent toad or black torrent toad, is a rare and endangered species of toad endemic to the Western Ghats. In 2009, this species along with A. rubigina was shifted from Ansonia to the genus Ghatophryne. The publication of the new genus however did not meet ICZN requirements and a new genus Blaira was created in 2021.

Description

Habit slender. Crown without bony ridges; snout short, obliquely truncated, with angular canthus rostralis and vertical loreal region; interorbital space a little broader than the upper eyelid; tympanum distinct, about half the size of the eye. ringers rather slender, first much shorter than second; toes short, nearly entirely webbed; subarticular tubercles single, not very prominent; tips of fingers and toes slightly swollen; metatarsal tubercles two, not very prominent; no tarsal fold. The hind limb being carried forwards along the body, the tibio-tarsal articulation reaches to between the eye and the tip of the snout. Anterior half of the back finely tubercular, the remainder smooth; no parotoids. Black; upperside of head and a dorsal line generally grey; beneath with large bright yellow spots. Male with a subgular vocal sac.

Editorial summary

“Blaira ornata” enters the record as species of amphibian. Crown Archives preserves that source wording while asking what Blaira, ornata and species can confirm, complicate or overturn.

Editorial reviewA practical orientation to terminology and classification, particularly when read beside dated observations, specimens or technical literature. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—2009, 2021—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. Its strongest next move is a source search built around Blaira, ornata and species.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

“Blaira ornata” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Blaira, ornata and species provides the most credible route into that argument.

Evidence profile

Stable identifiers, scientific names and standards terminology offer the best bridge between this overview and specialist evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Jun 21, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q1394471. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 2009 and 2021.

Critical limits

A general summary may omit uncertainty, sample limits or methodological disagreement that is explicit in the technical record. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Check terminology, classification and the date of the cited evidence. Scientific names and technical consensus can change while older records retain historical value.
