Source-derived summary

The Ferapontov Monastery is a monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ferapontovo, Kirillovsky District, Vologda Oblast, Russia. The monastery was founded by Saint Ferapont in 1398. In 2000, the monastery was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

History

The monastery was founded by Saint Ferapont in 1398 in the Russian North, to the east from the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, named after his fellow monk, Saint Cyril of Beloozero. The fame of the monastery started to spread under Kirill's disciple, Saint Martinian, who was to become a father superior of the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra in 1447.

Even after Martinian's death, his monastery was protected and favoured by members of Ivan III's family. The most ancient structure, the Cathedral of Nativity of the Virgin (1490), was built in brick by the masters of Rostov. This edifice is the best preserved of three sister cathedrals erected in the 1490s in the Russian North. All the interior walls are covered with invaluable frescoes by the great medieval painter Dionisius. This is the last surviving Russian medieval church with fully painted walls.

Editorial summary

This brief starts where responsible research should: with the source description of “Ferapontov Monastery” as uNESCO World Heritage Site. Everything that follows is an evidence route, not borrowed authority.

Editorial reviewA practical starting point whose main value is the path it opens into stronger specialist and primary sources. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1398, 2000, 1447, 1490—that can be checked directly. The linked authority record independently contributes the date 1398. The account is most persuasive where Ferapontov, Monastery and UNESCO can be independently traced.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The subject matters to the general reference register because the source frames it as uNESCO World Heritage Site. Its deeper value depends on whether names, dates, institutions and citations support that framing.

Evidence profile

Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Jul 3, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q838256. VIAF identifies the subject as 145719721. The Library of Congress control number is no96010664. Authority coordinates are 59.956, 38.568. 4 of 5 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1398, 2000, 1447 and 1490.

Critical limits

The absence of detail may reflect summary conventions rather than a lack of surviving documentation. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
