Emilio Bello Codesido
Chilean lawyer, diplomat, deputy and President of the Government Junta that ruled Chile in 1925

Emilio Bello Codesido (31 July 1868 – 3 March 1963) was a Chilean liberal lawyer, diplomat, and politician who briefly exercised executive authority in Chile in 1925. He became president of the Government Junta following the overthrow of Luis Altamirano Talavera, president of the previous governing junta, on 23 January. His brief tenure ended with the return to power of Arturo Alessandri, who came back to Chile after his exile in Italy and France.
In 1937, while serving as Minister of National Defense, Bello was proposed as a presidential candidate by Alessandri, who was then serving his second term as president (1932–1938), ahead of the presidential election scheduled for the following year. However, Gustavo Ross, a liberal politician and Minister of Finance who was in Europe at the time, pre-empted the move, frustrating Alessandri's plans.
Alessandri subsequently expressed his frustration at the prospect of a victory by Popular Front (FP) candidate Pedro Aguirre Cerda. Aguirre Cerda ultimately won the election; Ross later withdrew his allegations of "electoral fraud" on 12 November.
From 1894 to 1906, Bello served four consecutive terms as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, representing Valparaíso and Casablanca. He subsequently held several ministerial portfolios during the administrations of Federico Errázuriz Echaurren, Germán Riesco, and Arturo Alessandri. Under Alessandri, he briefly served as acting Minister of the Interior and twice held the portfolio of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Worship and Colonization during the period covered in the article.

Why this record matters
“Emilio Bello Codesido” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Emilio, Bello and Codesido provides the most credible route into that argument.
The entry’s evidential value lies in the named roles, institutions and publications that can be tested against primary documentation. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 21, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q3724339. VIAF identifies the subject as 125145856991722921081. 1 of 2 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1868, 1963, 1925 and 1937.
Public reputation and documentary evidence do not always develop together; absence from a summary is not evidence of historical absence. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
