Electrical telegraph
Early system for transmitting text over wires

Electrical telegraphy is point-to-point distance communicating via sending electric signals over wire, a system primarily used from the 1840s until the late 20th century. It was the first electrical telecommunications system and the most widely used of a number of early messaging systems called telegraphs, that were devised to send text messages more quickly than physically carrying them. Electrical telegraphy can be considered the first example of electrical engineering.
“Electrical telegraph” enters the record as early system for transmitting text over wires. Crown Archives preserves that source wording while asking what Electrical, telegraph and Early can confirm, complicate or overturn.
Why this record matters
“Electrical telegraph” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Electrical, telegraph and Early provides the most credible route into that argument.
Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 20, 2026.
A concise general-reference account can conceal disagreements about scope, terminology or the weight assigned to individual sources. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
