Source-derived summary

The Ehrenfest model (or dog–flea model) of diffusion was proposed by Tatiana and Paul Ehrenfest in 1907 to explain the second law of thermodynamics. The model considers N particles in two containers. Particles independently change container at a rate λ. If X(t) = i is defined to be the number of particles in one container at time t, then it is a birth–death process with transition rates

is monotonically increasing (H-theorem). This is a consequence of the convergence to the equilibrium distribution.

Interpretation of results

Consider that at the beginning all the particles are in one of the containers. It is expected that over time the number of particles in this container will approach

N

/

and stabilize near that state (containers will have approximately the same number of particles). However from mathematical point of view, going back to the initial state is possible (even almost sure). From mean recurrence theorem follows that even the expected time to going back to the initial state is finite, and it is

Editorial summary

The public source identifies “Ehrenfest model” as model of diffusion. This brief keeps that definition visible, then builds a research path around Ehrenfest, model and Model.

Editorial reviewA dependable orientation record for establishing vocabulary, names and a first evidence trail. The current lead gives the account dated anchors—1907, 1947—that can be checked directly. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. Its value is orientation rather than verdict, with Ehrenfest, model and Model providing the first useful test.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Ehrenfest model”, the useful work is to connect “model of diffusion” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

The citation trail is more important than the brevity of the summary: it shows where individual claims can be examined in context. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 17, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q3318105. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 1907 and 1947.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.

Three-step research path

  1. Establish the record: confirm the title “Ehrenfest model”, its source revision and the description used here.
  2. Expand the search: follow Ehrenfest model primary sources, Ehrenfest model archive and Ehrenfest research across catalogues and specialist indexes.
  3. Test the account: compare the strongest cited source with the responsible institution’s current record and note any disagreement.

Questions for further research

  1. Which source most directly establishes the central claim about “Ehrenfest model”?
  2. Which institution is responsible for the underlying evidence?
  3. What terminology or title could unlock a more precise catalogue search?
