Source-derived summary

Cyperus odoratus is a species of flowering plant in the sedge family Cyperaceae. It is known by the common names fragrant flatsedge and rusty flatsedge. It has a pantropical distribution that extends into the temperate regions of North and South America. The species is quite variable and may in fact be more than one species included under a single name.

Description

Cyperus odoratus sensu lato is an annual sedge approaching half a meter in height on average but known to grow much taller. It usually has some long, thin leaves around the base of the plant. The inflorescence is made up of one to several cylindrical spikes, each resembling a bottle brush. There are 5 to 8 leaf-like bracts at the base of the inflorescence. Each of the spikes bears a large number of flat, oval-shaped spikelets. Each spikelet is usually light brown to reddish-brown and has a few to over 20 flowers.

Editorial summary

The public source identifies “Cyperus odoratus” as species of plant. This brief keeps that definition visible, then builds a research path around Cyperus, odoratus and species.

Editorial reviewUseful for establishing the present vocabulary of the subject while preserving a route back to the evidence on which that vocabulary rests. The current 153-word lead offers orientation but no explicit four-digit date, so chronology should not be assumed. The selected authority fields contribute no independent date. Its value is orientation rather than verdict, with Cyperus, odoratus and species providing the first useful test.
Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Cyperus odoratus”, the useful work is to connect “species of plant” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

Datasets, specimens, observations and peer-reviewed methods provide the appropriate test for the technical claims summarized here. The source revision retrieved here is dated May 19, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q4247303. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference.

Critical limits

A general summary may omit uncertainty, sample limits or methodological disagreement that is explicit in the technical record. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Check terminology, classification and the date of the cited evidence. Scientific names and technical consensus can change while older records retain historical value.
