Source-derived summary

Chintadripet (originally Chinna Thari Pettai) is a locality in Chennai, in India. Located on the southern banks of the Cooum River, it is a residential-cum-commercial area surrounded by Chepauk, Island Grounds, Pudupet, Egmore, Anna Salai and Chennai Central

The neighbourhood

The area is served by the Chintadripet MRTS Railway Station abutting the Cooum River. The neighbourhood is an auto service hub and is also known for its fish market.

Historical street names

Several streets in Chintadripet preserve names dating from the colonial period. Blackers Road, which retains that name today, was probably named after H. Blacker, who owned a house at its junction with Mount Road in 1837. Ritchie Street, also retaining its historical name, is attributed to Arthur Macdonald Ritchie, who served as Registrar of the Madras High Court in the nineteenth century. The street later became one of Chennai's principal markets for electronics and electronic components.

Harris Bridge retains its historical name and commemorates Lord Harris, Governor of Madras from 1854 to 1859. The adjoining Harris Road, likewise attributed to Harris, was subsequently renamed Adithanar Salai in 1987 by then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. G. Ramachandran in memory of newspaper proprietor and politician S. P. Adithanar.

Dams Road runs close to and roughly parallel with the Cooum River.

Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Chintadripet”, the useful work is to connect “human settlement in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

The citation trail is more important than the brevity of the summary: it shows where individual claims can be examined in context. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 19, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q5101291. Authority coordinates are 13.067, 80.267. 2 of 2 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1837, 1854, 1859 and 1987.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
