Source-derived summary

Northeastern Tasmanian, or Pyemmairre, is an Aboriginal language of Tasmania.

It is identified in the reconstruction of Claire Bowern. It was spoken in the northeastern corner of the island, including at Cape Portland.

Northeastern Tasmanian is attested from three word lists of Charles Robinson and his father George Augustus Robinson: From Cape Portland (366 words), Ben Lomond (195 words), and Pipers River (126 words). Bowern also includes the language of the Port Dalrymple vocabulary (125 words) collected by J.-P. Gaimard in the Tamar River region of the North Midlands; however, it is divergent, and Dixon & Crowley (1981) consider it to be a distinct language.

The name Pyemmairre may not include the highland people of Ben Lomond, for which Plangermaireener ("Plangamerina") has been used.

Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

The subject matters to the general reference register because the source frames it as language. Its deeper value depends on whether names, dates, institutions and citations support that framing.

Evidence profile

The citation trail is more important than the brevity of the summary: it shows where individual claims can be examined in context. The source revision retrieved here is dated Aug 22, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q7262964. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 1981.

Critical limits

Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Use the entry as an orientation point, then follow its citations and revision history. Names, dates and institutional relationships should be checked against the original record.
