Canthigaster capistrata
species of fish

Canthigaster capistrata, known as the Macaronesian sharpnose-puffer, is a species of pufferfish in the family Tetraodontidae. It is native to the Eastern Atlantic, where it is known to occur near oceanic islands. Recently several juvenile specimens have been observed in the Mediterranean, precisely in the Alboran Sea. The species reaches at least 13 cm (5.1 inches) in total length.
Identification
Tetradontidae is the name of the pufferfish family. Within Tetradontidae there are two subfamilies: the Tetraodontinae and the Canthigasterinae family. Canthigaster capistrata belongs to the Canthigasterinae subfamily, which are known for their laterally compressed bodies, pointed snouts, and small gill openings. Bold and bright color patterns color their bodies to display and warn predators of their tetrodotoxin, a lethal toxin that is found within Tetradontidae.
Only recently has C. capistrata been acknowledged as its own species. Previously, it had been classified as a junior synonym to the species C. rostrata.
“Canthigaster capistrata” enters the record as species of fish. Crown Archives preserves that source wording while asking what Canthigaster, capistrata and species can confirm, complicate or overturn.
Why this record matters
“Canthigaster capistrata” is worth following because a concise public description often conceals a longer documentary argument. Here, Canthigaster, capistrata and species provides the most credible route into that argument.
Datasets, specimens, observations and peer-reviewed methods provide the appropriate test for the technical claims summarized here. The source revision retrieved here is dated Jul 27, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q3757569. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference.
Current terminology should not be projected backward without checking the classification used when the underlying evidence was created. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
