high school in Krakow, Poland

Bartłomiej Nowodworski Lyceum (Polish: I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Bartłomieja Nowodworskiego; unofficially known as the Nowodworek) in Kraków, Poland, is one of the oldest secondary schools in Poland. Its current location is on Na Groblach Square, just across the Planty from the Kraków Old Town and a few hundred meters from Wawel Castle.
History
The Senate of the Jagiellonian University decided to establish a school preparing students (boys only) for further education at the university level on 5 May 1586. The school was opened in 1588. Bartłomiej (Bartholomew) Nowodworski (born ca. 1552, died 13 February 1625), Polish nobleman, courtier and officer, endowed it in 1617 and 1619, thus enabling its further expansion. In recognition of his contribution, the school became known as Collegium Nowodworskiego, renamed to Liceum św. Anny (St. Anne's Lyceum) in 1818, and to c.k.

Why this record matters
The phrase “high school in Krakow, Poland” supplies a clear boundary for inquiry. It also exposes the unanswered questions: who defined that boundary, when it became stable and which sources sit outside it.
The record creator and administrative purpose are central evidence, because official documentation reflects both action and institutional priorities. The source revision retrieved here is dated Jul 17, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q4865820. VIAF identifies the subject as 302123335. Authority coordinates are 50.057, 19.933. 3 of 4 selected statements include explicit references; 1 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 1586, 1588, 1552 and 1625.
Official terminology may obscure informal participation, dissent or communities documented only indirectly. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
