Astyris profundi
species of mollusc

Astyris profundi is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Columbellidae, the dove snails.
Description
Astyris profundi shells are relatively smooth, with most of the sculpture limited to spiral threads around the base, and around the siphonal canal. The shell color is either clear or tan, and is somewhat translucent. Their shells can be up to 8 mm in size.
Distribution
This deepwater species is distributed in the Atlantic Ocean, from off North Carolina to northern Cuba and the Caribbean Sea, occurring at depths between 200 and 500 meters. It is also reported from the Azores and Cape Verde. Sources disagree on whether the species occurs in the Gulf of Mexico: the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum states it "apparently is not found" there, while MolluscaBase lists a Gulf of Mexico gastropod checklist (Rosenberg, Moretzsohn & García, 2009) as a basis of record for the species.

Why this record matters
A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Astyris profundi”, the useful work is to connect “species of mollusc” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.
The date and method of observation matter as much as the stated conclusion, especially where classification or consensus has changed. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 7, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q3139436. None of the 0 selected statements returned an explicit reference. The first chronological checks are 2009.
Current terminology should not be projected backward without checking the classification used when the underlying evidence was created. The lead is largely declarative, so disagreement and counter-evidence require a deliberate search beyond the opening account. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
