Al-Shabaab (militant group)
Somalia-based Wahhabi militant group

Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen simply known as al-Shabaab is a transnational Wahhabi-Salafi Jihadist militant organization. It is involved in the ongoing Somali Civil War, controlling a non-contiguous network of primarily rural areas in southern Somalia that some consider a quasi-state. Since 2011, the group refers to the territory under its control as the Islamic Emirate of Somalia, although it has not formally declared itself as an emirate. Al-Shabaab has invoked takfir to rationalize its terrorist attacks on Somali civilians and civil servants. It is, in a more limited capacity, active elsewhere in East Africa, and has pledged allegiance to the militant organization al-Qaeda. Al-Shabaab has been designated as a terrorist organization by numerous countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, as well as several EAC and EU member-states. The militant group remains subject to international sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council, the European Union, and other jurisdictions.
Begin with the source’s own compact description: “Al-Shabaab (militant group)” is somalia-based Wahhabi militant group. The dossier treats that line as a proposition to test through Al-Shabaab, militant and group, not as a finished interpretation.
Why this record matters
The phrase “somalia-based Wahhabi militant group” supplies a clear boundary for inquiry. It also exposes the unanswered questions: who defined that boundary, when it became stable and which sources sit outside it.
Named sources, stable identifiers and responsible institutions provide the strongest route from overview to verifiable evidence. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 26, 2026. The first chronological checks are 2011.
Overview language is designed for orientation and should not be treated as a substitute for the evidence cited beneath it. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.
