Source-derived summary

Mansoura (Egyptian Arabic: المنصورة, romanized: El Manṣūra, IPA: [el.mɑnˈsˤuːɾɑ], locally [el.mænˈsˤuːɾe]; lit. 'The Victorious') is a city in Egypt located on the eastern bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile river. The city is the capital of the Dakahlia Governorate and has an estimated population of 600,000 as of 2024.

Etymology

Mansoura (منصورة) in Arabic means 'victorious'. The city is named after the El Mansoura Battle (1250) against Louis IX of France during the Seventh Crusade.

History

Mansoura was established in 1219 by al-Kamil of the Ayyubid dynasty upon the Phatnitic branch of the Nile on the site of several older villages, such as Al-Bishtamir (البشطمير) and Kafr al-Badamas (كفر البدماص, from Ancient Greek ποταμός 'river, canal'). After the Egyptians defeated the Crusaders during the Seventh Crusade, the city was named Mansoura.

In the Seventh Crusade, the Capetians were defeated and put to flight; between fifteen and thirty thousand of their men fell on the battlefield. Louis IX of France was captured in the main Battle of Fariskur, and confined in the house of Ibrahim Ibn Lokman, secretary of the sultan, and under the guard of the eunuch Sobih. The king's brother was imprisoned in the same house. The sultan provided for their sustenance.

Editorial analysis

Why this record matters

A short description can identify a subject without explaining its stakes. For “Mansoura, Egypt”, the useful work is to connect “city in Egypt” to the records capable of establishing context and consequence.

Evidence profile

Maps, plans, fabric surveys and administrative records can establish how the site’s name, extent and function changed over time. The source revision retrieved here is dated Sep 24, 2026. The linked authority identifier is Q223587. VIAF identifies the subject as 155977939. The Library of Congress control number is n83153481. Authority coordinates are 31.050, 31.383. 2 of 4 selected statements include explicit references; 0 carry qualifiers and 0 use preferred rank. The first chronological checks are 2024, 1250 and 1219.

Critical limits

A single description cannot reconcile every naming convention, rebuilding phase or administrative transfer associated with a place. The source lead contains qualifying language; that uncertainty should survive quotation, summary and reuse. Authority statements aid reconciliation but still require their own references, qualifiers and ranks to be checked.

How to read it

Treat names, boundaries and functions as historically changeable. Maps, plans, inventories and administrative records can clarify what the place meant at different dates.
